Derek H. Jones
Founding Partner
Derek has done more than practice law: He began work at the age of 13 as a golf caddy at a country club and helped pay his way through college and law school with his earnings. After law school he traveled and did migrant labor picking apples in a commercial orchard. He worked on industrial boats based in Savannah, Miami and New Orleans and held a Coast Guard Merchant Mariner’s license as an ordinary seaman and tankerman. While steering a boat returning from San Juan to Miami, the vessel was captured by the Cuban navy (the navigational error that caused the vessel to be in Cuban waters was the first mate’s) and he spent several days in Cuban territorial waters before the boat was released.Derek acted as the interpreter and did his best to convince his captors that the other crew members and he were not CIA spies.
Derek is an ardent outdoorsman and conservationist and has won poetry contests for his Haikus.
